ETHAN HOLDEN
Film Noir
2016 is upon us and I'm working on my film noir units with my classmates Joe Crompton & Beccy Delaney. The brief is to create a scene which would aired as part of a TV show on ITV on Sunday nights at 9PM. The programme would have to hold all the conventions of the genre (Film Noir/Crime Drama). I give you:
- SYNOPSIS -
(as part of our coursework)
The Mayor of Redmoor, (John Royle), is at the crime scene with the rest of the police force including Police Chief, Michael Donald. John Royle has hired an alcohol dependent police detective, Harry Parker, to try and discover who has murdered his cousin, Kenneth Royle. John explains the outline of what has happened to Kenneth to Harry, who then wants to take a further look at the crime scene. Harry passes the police officers and heads towards where Kenneth's body is. After he has had a closer look, he goes to leave and asks John, the mayor, whether he has an suspects. John begins to explain about a man Kenneth had had arguments and several fights with in the past called Frank Simmons.
-SCENE FILMED-
Harry Parker, police investigator, then calls in Frank Simmons for interrogation. The interrogation room is dimly light with a single light and at the table sits Harry Parker and Frank Simmons and in the shadows stands John Royle. Harry asks the usual questions still unsure to arrest Frank. John often gets very angry at Frank and jumps out banging on the table. John shouts at Frank "You went in there knife at the ready to kill him!". Harry, very confused, asks how he knew that he was killed with a knife, stating only he has seen that. Parker is then very suspicious of John Royle despite his attempts to justify his words.
-SCENE FILMED-
Harry then reviews the interrogation with the other police officers and police chief, Michael Donald, who all continue to believe that Frank murdered Kenneth. The police chief tells Harry that he had better solve this crime because he hasn't done so well in the past.
Parker then heads to the Royle household in search of any clues. He is let into the house by the mayor's wife, Victoria Royle. Harry then talks over cups of tea to Victoria who seems completely useless and knows nothing about her husband's jobs and friends. Harry then looks around the house and finds nothing of interest but as he leaves the house, the mayor's daughter, Grace Royle comes in. Harry introduces himself and asks her about Grace's father. Grace is keen to help and says that she has often wondered what her dad gets up to so has looked into it. Grace reveals that her father has been involved in shady business with lots of strange men. Grace tells Harry that her dad is not a nice man and walks off, leaving Harry curious.
It's now later on in the day and Harry heads to the bar where he feels comfortable and asks the bar man, who she is good friends with and if he knows anything about the Royle family or a Frank Simmons. The bar man hasn't heard of these people which leads Harry more confused.
Parker then goes home, he is very tired after such a long day. He logs onto Facebook and is flicking through his old pictures and comes across one with her and Kenneth. This shows that Harry and Kenneth had history which will hopefully make audiences question the relationship between the two characters. Harry then closes the computer with anger and heads to make dinner and the scene ends with her cutting a cucumber with a knife identical to the one Kenneth was stabbed with!
